What To Wear Guide: Individual Outfits
Planning for each of the individual outfits within the group wardrobe plan
Tips for each of the individual outfits in your group portrait or for an individual portrait.
Now that you have a color combination established for the group, it is time to look at what each individual person will wear. Using the group colors as a guide keep these tips in mind for each of the individual outfits:
- Comfort is key: Make sure everyone feels confident and comfortable in their outfits. Clothes that are too tight, itchy, or restrictive can lead to fidgeting and awkward poses in photos.
- Accessorize strategically: Encourage subtle accessorizing with jewelry, scarves, or hats to add pops of personality. Avoid anything too flashy or distracting.
- Patterns: Avoid large or overly bold patterns which can be distracting in the overall photo.
- Adding Interest: Layers are wonderful. They add interest and texture and make the outfit look more put together.
- Creating an Outfit vs “clothes”: Each outfit should have at least three main parts. For example: dress, sweater, belt or dress, belt, great shoes.
- Fit: Clothes that fit well tend to flatter the wearer and create a polished look in photos. Avoid baggy or overly tight clothing.
- Style: Choose clothes that coordinate with the overall vibe of the photoshoot. Formal or casual? Modern or Classic?
- Shoes: they will be seen in the photograph, so keep this in mind when choosing shoes. Be sure you can walk and stand comfortably as well.

This guide is to give you the best foot forward to plan your photoshoot wardrobe with confidence! Your outfit selection can add a lot of personal style and theming to your portraits. Because I don’t use a high amount of props with each photoshoot, I recommend that you look to your photoshoot wardrobe as the props for your imagery.
