What To Wear Guide: Location Outfits
Planning for your outfits based on the location of your photoshoot.
Tips for “location outfits” a wardrobe based on the location for your next photoshoot.
The final thing to consider when planning your outfits for your next shoot is the location where the photos will be captured. The location of your session will contribute to the look and feel of your photos. Analyze the location theme and color when choosing outfits. Location outfits can go a long way to supporting that theme and elevating the style of the image.
Example: Photos on the beach – you wouldn’t choose to wear corduroy pants. Doing that would contrast with the beach location and make the viewer question that incongruency. You would be better served to choose to wear something light weight and flowy to match the beachy style and have the fabric blowing in the breeze. This lightweight outfit will enhance the location and feeling in the photos.
Location Themes: Is there an element in your photoshoot that is there for a thematic effect? For example, for holiday photos there may be decorations that fit the color profile of that holiday. For holiday themed photoshoots you would want to wear something neutral or matching the color of that holiday. If the theme was winter or Christmas for example, cozy layers, textures and prints like nordic themes, plaids and velvets would add to the theme.
Location Colors: Is the location for your photoshoot dominated by a certain color? Is the location full of grass or trees? Then wearing green would help you blend in. Which can be lovely, but if you want to pop out more I would choose something other than green.
Is your photoshoot in the studio with our sofa or a solid backdrop? The same rule as outside applies, dress in a similar color if you want to blend into the background and in a contrasting color to stand out.

This guide is to give you the best foot forward to plan your photoshoot wardrobe with confidence! Your outfit selection can add a lot of personal style and theming to your portraits. Because I don’t use a high amount of props with each photoshoot, I recommend that you look to your photoshoot wardrobe as the props for your imagery.
