What Should I Wear for my Studio + Outdoor Senior Photoshoot?

Choosing the right outfit can make a big difference in how your photos turn out. For studio sessions, we recommend wearing clothing that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Solid colors photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on you. Avoid busy patterns or logos that can distract from your face. Neutrals, pastels, and jewel tones tend to look best in our studio lighting, but don’t be afraid to add a pop of color if it fits your style.

Depending on your session length, bring your clothing freshly pressed and ready to go for your photoshoot. You can change into your outift(s) at the studio. I would recommend that you stick to a color palette with complementary tones for a timeless and cohesive feel. If you’re unsure, we’re happy to offer styling guidance in advance or on the day of your session. Remember, confidence is key — wear what makes you feel amazing.

How Do I Prepare For A Senior Studio + Outdoor Portrait Session?

Preparing for a studio session with professional lighting is a little different from natural light photography, but it’s nothing to stress about. Studio lighting gives us full control over shadows, highlights, and mood — which means your images will look polished, vibrant, and flattering. Here are a few tips to help you feel prepared and look your best:

1. Hydrate and Rest: A good night’s sleep and plenty of water the day before your shoot can help your skin look fresh and your energy feel natural. Studio lighting can be quite crisp and detailed, so healthy skin and bright eyes make a big difference.

2. Keep Makeup Matte (But You Do You!): If you wear makeup, we recommend a matte finish rather than anything too shimmery, which can reflect studio lights in ways you might not expect. That said, we encourage you to wear makeup in a way that feels most you. Whether that’s full glam or a clean, fresh look, your comfort and confidence are what matter most.

3. Avoid SPF or High-Shine Products: Some sunscreens or luminous foundations can cause flashback in studio lighting. Opt for products that don’t contain titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, and stick to minimal shine in your base products.

4. Iron or Steam Your Outfits: Wrinkles will show up under studio lights — and while we can retouch some things in post-processing, clean, pressed clothing always photographs better. Bring your outfits on hangers if possible, especially if they wrinkle easily.

5. Trust the Process: Studio lighting can feel new if you’ve never experienced it before, but we’ll guide you every step of the way. We’ll adjust the lights and poses to flatter your features and fit the vibe you’re going for — whether that’s sleek and professional, bold and creative, or soft and elegant.

For the outdoor portion of your session, you want to repeat all the steps for the studio session, plus a few more.

  1. Wear shoes suited to the terrain
  2. Be aware of wind when choosing props- for example, balloons at the beach can get tricky.
  3. Bring water to stay hydrated throughout your photoshoot.
  4. Bring touchup makeup- mostly lipstick or lip gloss if desired. It will wear off more in outdoor conditions.

The goal is to create stunning images that make you feel seen, celebrated, and confident — and studio lighting helps us do exactly that.

How long does a studio + outdoor senior photoshoot take?

Our studio portrait sessions last between 20 minutes and 120 minutes, depending on the session type and number of outfits being photographed. A good rule of thumb is to allow for 20-30 minutes of photoshoot time per outfit that you would like to have photographed.

Can I bring props or personal items to my studio or outdoor session?

Absolutely! Props and personal touches can add meaning and creativity to your session. Whether it’s a favorite book, a graduation cap, a musical instrument, a bouquet of flowers, or even your pet (yes, we love pets in the studio!), feel free to bring items that reflect your personality or story. We encourage senior clients to bring items that highlight hobbies, sports, or future plans.

If you’re unsure what would work best, we’re happy to consult with you ahead of time and suggest ideas based on your session type. We also have a small selection of curated props available in the studio, including stools, seating options, and backdrops. If you have something specific in mind, just let us know in advance so we can plan accordingly. Our goal is to help you create images that feel authentic and personal.
