Color Harmonies For Planning Group Outfits
Coordinating group outfits for a large family photoshoot can be tricky, but it’s definitely achievable! Here are some tips to ensure everyone looks and feels their best:
- Choose one type of color combination as a guide for colors that everyone can incorporate into their outfits. This will create a cohesive look without being too matchy-matchy.
- Traditional color combinations are based off the color wheel. You can see the most popular ones in the chart below.

My personal favorite combinations are the analogous and complementary color schemes. To achieve the analogous combination, choose one color on the color wheel and the color on either side of it. To achieve the complementary color scheme, choose any color on the color wheel and then also choose the opposite color from that.
Also, neutrals and soft “nature” colors are always a safe bet. When choosing this method, be sure to add texture and layers to add interest to the outfits.
Once you’ve selected the colors, try to coordinate, not match. Encourage everyone to wear solid colors or patterns that are subtle and complement the chosen palette. Avoid large, busy prints that might clash in photos.
If you think you want a more simple approach- tell your family to pick one color (monochromatic color scheme) and everyone can wear shade of that color. For example: Blue. Everyone can wear shades of blue from navy blue through baby blue.
BONUS TIP: AVOID NEON COLORS

This guide is to give you the best foot forward to plan your photoshoot wardrobe with confidence! Your outfit selection can add a lot of personal style and theming to your portraits. Because I don’t use a high amount of props with each photoshoot, I recommend that you look to your photoshoot wardrobe as the props for your imagery.
